ALL religion leaves me cold.
More deaths and misery has been committed " in the name of religion" than any other cause.

Religion is man made excuses for their way to God , The bible is the inspired word of God ,read it and then be directed as to how it teaches . There is no one religion mentioned in the bible . I'm thankful for at least one thing each day I wake up ,breath, means He's given me another day to live . We don't answer for religions we all have a choice believe in God or don't.
Yes,I rememger Short Strand before redevelopment.I worked there for 13 years. Some of the happiest days of my life!.Great, generous people!!!
Still visit sometimes.the redevelopment work started whilst I worked there. It's so changed.
I think the redevelopment started around early 1980s
Don't really knoe but I know a lot of them did before I srarted working there.I suppose they moved to be with family who already moved to Downpatrick
Eileen had worked in the upholstery department at Harland and Wolff with her husband Jack.

just out of interest, did you ever hear why so many from there moved down to downpatrick ??
In the early 70's there were new housing estates being built in Downpatrick, Craigavon and Antrim.
Housing Executive tenants were offered these and because the Troubles were so bad in Belfast as well as the houses, a lot of people to the chance for a new house in a (hopefully) peaceful area.
I know quite a few Belfast families in Downpatrick.

Didn't live on the Strand but was there a lot during 1971/72 before I left Ireland. I was in the Order of Mallta. The images and faces are still vivid but unfortunately the names excape me. Only just found this site and it has been good to read everones messages in the various boards and a lot of the street names and people are coming back to me. Anyone remember the McCabes (Desi and John). Boxed at St. Matthews but I was crap at it - always got wacked on the neb and gushed everywhere. My brother was a good boxer (under Harry Enright) and all Ireland champion in his weight.Hi Som
Sorry I won't be able to contribute much but it is really good to read your messages - hope you don't mind me eavesdropping.

it doesn't seem to be a cross community project. More a have a look at the slum we created and now we want money to clean it up so we can destroy it again.
the pictures of the graffiti on the walls. and why put a picture of graffiti saying that someone is still a child beater
Where is it you're talking about? ???
have a look at the pictures
http://www.bytes.org/html/Short%20Strand/My%20Webs/short_strand.htm
and it still does not represent cross community
maybe not to you but to others maybe. time to give it a rest i say.

Enjoying this thread about the Strand, a few of these boys probably got into it and never recovered.
I had mates in Dee st, and then I drank up the King Dick a few times, and the Orange Widows around Woodstock Rd, all of them were terrified of the Strand (they didn't know I was a Fenian)
Don't go into St Matthews grounds....remember???
In all sincerity the Strand was mellow compared to many other areas

What a great photo. Oh those gingham skirts and dresses. Anyone recall the McGloins in Madrid Street just below Dr Boyds which later became wee Dr McKees? There was Kay and Terry and May, Peter and wee Michael.Doctor McKee delivered me at home.He was the family doctor.
Taken about 1955 in Woodstock Street. There were 2 O'Donnell families(lived around the corner from each other). The girl on the right was from the Woodstock St. ones. For the life of me I can't remember her name.Geraldine??
The lad is Jimmy Creaney and one of the girls is a wee O'Donnell (I think)

Hello EveryoneHi We lived at 45 Mountpottinger, My Parents knew your family sadly they are both passed away, I remember Mrs Willson, she was highly respected when she moved from Beechfield Street my family moved into thier house, this was thanks to one of them kindly giving my parents the info that they where moving. sorry I don't know much more,
Im researching my family tree. I would like to find out about the Wilson family. They lived at 49 Mountpottinger Road in the Short Strand. My great great aunt was Sarah Wilson (Friel). She had sons Edward and William Wilson. Her sister Martha Friel also lived with them. I found from St Matthews records that Sarah died in 1950, Martha 1947, and Edward in 1973, he was then living in Beechfield Street. I was just wondering did Edward and his wife Ann have any family. I know even 1973 is a long time ago but would like to hear from anyone who knew of this family.
any one remember a girl from sheriff st called Margaret Dynes, she was friends with a girl from the mountpottinger rd called Geraldine Thompson, had a Brother called LiamYes I remember Margaret and Geraldine, I lived on the mountpottinger Road and we all used to go to school together. Island Girl
Hi Rosiejoe, I went to St Matthews Girls school, I remember the passage well we used to go into the passage to get into the play ground which was in the left and the way into the convent was on the right, we used to think it was haunted back then, it was always dark cold and spooky even on the brightest summers day,
What a fascinating piece of info, I went to school at St Matthews back in 50s and never knew how it got its name. Talking of St Matthews does anyone know if the tunnel in the chapel grounds that led to the school is still there - I expect not after all these years.
 i knew paddy and josie doherty from Sheriff Street , or rather they were good friends of my late mother. ;)
Its not that we are terrified of the S/Strand but look at the history and what it started

Any one remember the name of the people who owned the shop in Seaforde st, on the corner of Nobles field yet? Facing Comber stYes - I think their name was also Young. As kids we had a rhyme relating to the owner and the merchandise. Charming little verse - 'May Young, horse's dung, stick a penny up her bum, down comes chewing gum'. Ah, the halcyon days in which true poetry found its origins.
youngs certainly rings a bell, but stitt dosnt, it might be me you could be right
Was it 'Stitt's', married onto Youngs. I think the Stitt's were from the Newtownard's road....(Rab Young's family!)
Does it ring a bell?
Rep1 would remember Matt Stitt an old neighbour.
I had the name Danny in my head but wasnt sure.
talking of seaforde st. any of yous remember martin power RIP who came from there ?
Don't wish to confuse the issue further but it is quite possible that all posts are correct. May Young most definitely worked in the shop in Seaforde Street in the 1950s and it was always called 'May Young's'. It could have been that someone else actually OWNED it. The 60s could have seen a change.
Was just wondering REP 1 if the 'Danny' you remember was a Danny Lennon. I seem to remember he and his wife running a wee shop in Beechfield Street at one point. I think he was actually a brother (or related to) Tommy Lennon (RIP) who owned the jewellery / trophy shop at Smithfield and supplied trophies to GAA, feiseanna etc
Was he a ginger haired Guy
Martin moved to Craigavon at the time of the big immigration, spoke to him many times, he died very sudden, hope hes in heaven, not a bad big soul

road hog Did he live next door to the shop we are talking about.I think he lived facing it

I checked with my mate and he said for as long as he could remember that shop on the corner of Nobels Field & Seaforde St was always known by him & his mate's as Mary Mo's!B burger, REP1, myself and others of the same era, (pre decimalisation,)were wondering who owned it at that time, I think youngs did.
Can anybody remember the name of the newsagents that was under the railway bridge near Memel St and was still open until the 1980's? This photo was taken in 1945.

Frank also taught myself, if I rememeber rightly, he was a very competent squash player.I remember him carrying his squash gear.
Sure is hot as hell here!Pity he died so young.I am sure that he is,sorely, missed.
Frank died in 1993---a brain tumour. His son John works for an IT firm in Belfast. The other son, Paul, was one of the first Catholics to join the PSNI and from what I hear he is well liked patrolling West Belfast. His daughter Romy has a family around Ormeau. His widow Rosemary has been to see us in New Zealand three or four times and on her first visit went para-gliding off Te Mata Peak here in Hawkes Bay.
(http://i45.tinypic.com/28bqxdy.png)great pic rep1, heard all my brothers and sisters talk about the 'pop' but this is the 1st image i've ever seen of it, just wondering if u'd remember it? wats the street running along side it?
I believe the Pop was on the corner of the mountpottinger rd, were strand walk is. It opened in 1917 closed 1972 and had 1100 seats.I think you might be talking about the picturedrome

Sorry, the Picterdrome was on the Mountpottinger Rd towards the Albertbridge Rd.
Cluan Place was just after it heading towards the Albertbridge Rd, with the council Yd just before it, we used to play on the Salt dunes when we were kids, there was hundreds of Eddie the Eagles in the Strand in them days lol

Aye mickybo I've got some photos taken around the lower N'ards road and the Green all taken in the late 60's, I'm just waiting for the person to whom I lent the CD with photos on it to return it hopefully over the weekend! As soon as I get it back I'll post them for ya. Here's another photo from the same area as the last one. It's Dalton street looking up to Memel Street taken in June 1970.

Thats a cracker buffalo, I got my booolers kicked in at Memel St by the Leckeys( rem them ? ) and their crony's lol always remember the Orange Arch at Memel St and still think of it to this day as I walk the bridge, at least now we can walk it, in our day it was a no no ! lolhad many of run in with the leckeys, we lived in quinn st and one day they managed 2 get on the roof of the sirocco works overlooking quinn st and threw bricks down at the windows smashing quite a few, when people ran into the street they made off shouting the usual slogans, after that episode everyone in the street were a bit fearful that they wud use the same tactics 4 something of a more sinister attack.

what was name of the pub on the corner of the mountpottinger and albertbridge rd ? bar 21 or something like that ?
Would anybody know where Newfoundland St. was? Found my granda on the 1911 cencus but me da doesn't know where it was. Might be to early to remember!
Off Memel Street East Belfast
The Bar was Hunt & Hinds
what years was it known as that ? id be quite sure that around late 60s early 70s b4 it went for a burton it was called something differant ? !
96 ring any bells?
Gor some reason, G, that number sticks in my head as having been the Bridge Bar but could be totally mistaken. Bar 21 may have been Hunts and Hinds ok.
I think 96 was on the front of kellys bar at the corner of thampson streer on a big sign or 69 not surekelly's bar was called 96 cos it was number 96 short strand.
We used our jam jars Mick to attack the Leckey's. Jake, Arter and myself The Short Strand Reaction Force.ha ha i thought it was sukie bottles in our day jim B!?
many a pint I had in kellys loved up stairs on a saturday great musicwas the only place that i knew at the time that sold strongbow on draft! six pints of that and u were anybodys lol
It was called the bar 40 it was burned down in 1970
Mickybo I'm still waiting for that disc to be returned so here's a photo of Young's Row taken in 1922 in the meantime!thanks buffalo, looks like there were also peace walls in the 20's!? im wondering if that is the pop cinema just 2 the right as was discussed in an earlier thread? i remember as a kid in the early 70's we used 2 walk from young row 2 the corner of seaford st as a dare as u were taking ur life in ur hands, very little has changed since the 20's.

not much going on in that pic but it tells a thousand stories, was just thinking my dad wud have been around 13 at that time the same age as some in the pic, but he never spoke about those days, its ironic that he nearly lost his life in a bomb in the early 70's at the other end of the strand!
Mickybo, if you look closely you can see bullet holes on the corner of the wall on the left hand side of the photo (made by a heavy calibre bullet by the look of it!), just above the heads of the kids! The 'Peace' wall was put up by the Army to reduce the potential for mob incursions into the streets of the Short Strand, hence the reason they left an opening just wide enough for one person at a time to pass through! (As seen on the right hand side of the barricade)
I would say the photo of the Strand is 1974.
Yes I would often refer to the black white days, when I'm talking to the kids, I liked the old black & white photos B burger posted they're very nostalgic when I'm out and about with my camera I would take black and white photo's, I don't know what it is, maybe everything back then was black & white what do you think.
I sure am olelad, born and reared ;-)
I would say the photo of the Strand is 1974.jim b, if u look closely at quinn st the murals r painted on the gable wall, wat year was the first festival? Rep 1 is spot on with the date of the strand bar bombing.
Has to be the summer of 74 :scratch_ones_head:had 2 b, and there was me thinking it was 75!? with the winnng murals of micky and donald lol, must have been the same year u and arter and jake run the brits out of the bus depot lol, rem when jake almost got his head blown off when a soldier let off a round from the post and it hit felix mckeatins wall rite beside where he was standing?

Is that a couple of the pidgeons in the background, Molly, Gerard. Dominic and Paul...?
hello bb the pics are great they made me a little home-sick i left 1964 for canada
Vulcan St, Sheriff St & Chemical St along with a lot of others in different areas had Dragons teeth installed by the Army (I remember watching them being put in place in Chemical St where I lived) to make it easier for the Army/Cops to mount road blocks, disrupt any potential speeding cars and also give the troops some solid protection to stand behind when doing vechicle checks.
I have some pics somewhere taken on the day Blairs Chimney was demolished. (When we were allowed in everyone swarmed all over it's ruins hacking off the tiny metal plates that were used to fasten the lighting rod & electric cables. I've still got mine somewhere at home..sad! lol)

hi buffaloburger you are right there was a photo of my dad in the short strand calendar i look forward to that calendar every year my sister always sends me one
I think Mickbo is older than me and I can vaguely remember getting candy apples at your Dad's house. I even remember buying a parachutist figure. You would fold the parachute up and then throw the action figure up into the air and it would float back down again! I lost a couple of them when they floated down into Patsy Curran's backyard on the corner of Mountpottinger Rd & Chemical St & snowball their dog ripped them to pieces! LOL
Frank correct me if I'm wrong but did your Dad have a handcart? The reason I ask is that I used to hang about with your nephew Jim from the mid 1970's to the mid 80's and I kind of remember seeing a photo of possibly your dad beside a handcart in Sheriff St. I do remember however calling into your Mums house with Jim and playing cards with her.. she should have gone professional! A harsh lesson learned there much to my cost!! LOL
I also remember your Bobby used to Taxi back in the 1970's. (I still see him from time to time in the Morning Star pub). I think the darts player Bobby George visted your Mums a couple of times when Bobby was his driver driving him about when he was in Belfast doing exhibitions.

Thought u mite say that REP1 lol, but wud tend 2 agree with u, if u cud jog my memory, didnt she have a little shop that didnt sell much!? can only rem going there 2 get candy apples.
thanks 4 keeping me rite REP, but wasthere another shop-type house in the street?
Micky she sold them from her house I don't think she sold anthing else. But there were loads of people selling different things from there homes, another women in Anderson Street was Lizzie Carson who sold lemonade from her house, She was killed in the Strand bar she was really nice person.
Road Hog is that anywhere near Chemical Alley.. ;)Mc Namee, the candy apples that Mrs Mc Curdy made were the best, she dipped them in coconut flakes before any of us knew what a coconut was :D but hte street wasnt far from the alley :D
There was a house that looked like a shop from the outside that belonged to Jane Donaldson.Yes REP, we were far away relations of the Donaldsons, all I can remember is the shop sold sweets, there never seemed to be any bread or ham etc, may be Im wrong
Hello EveryoneHi, i have contacted you before and you got back in touch with me, I am sorry I haven't replied but I am finding my way round and not very well it appears! I have asked my brother 'Big Man' if he can remember the Willson family and he can, when I next go home I will try and find out if any one still living in Beechfield St remembers them. I don't think they had any children but it may be worth contacting the local church which is St Matthews. as they would have baptisim records.
Yes REP, we were far away relations of the Donaldsons, all I can remember is the shop sold sweets, there never seemed to be any bread or ham etc, may be Im wrongThats what i thought road hog but maybe REP knos better being a close neighbour,i rem the donaldsons, did they move somewhere around the mountpottinger after the terrible events in the street?
After the event in the street, they moved into one of the houses on the mountpottinger rd, facing the picturedrome, from there, probably to were they are now.REP1 would know more about the shop, he ran a tab up in it :Dhelp can any one remember the little street off seaford st faceing vulcan st

Does anyone remember the old P1. teacher-Miss Carolan(I think) and that vile black stuff she made kids eat when they were naughty{that's hardly a Belfast word},I mean Bad.??If St Matthew's Boys' school - I remember her. Mrs Carlin I think it was! Don't remember her precise methods of interrogation and degrading treatment but she always scared the hell out of me. Looking back, most of the teachers there were good teachers of their time. Phil McTaggart (later principal) was an excellent and progressive teacher of the era.
Anyone remember Danny O,Neill from Seaforde Street. Had a sister Pauline?

I have traced my family (Keegan) back to the Short Strand in the 1900's and beyond. My Grt Aunt was Margaret Keegan married to William O'Hara and was living in Vulcan Street in 1911. My Grt Grandfather (Thomas Keegan) was living with her after she was married. My Grt Uncle James Keegan lived in Altcar Street, James was Thomas brother.I'm an O'Hara from Panton St Falls Rd my father William O'Hara and his grand father was a William O'Hara from Vulcan St.
As I have always seen myself as an Ulster Scot, I am really chuffed to see my background is not what I always thought. If anyone can help me add to the family history I would be very grteful.

THE best car you had REP was the sunbeam rapier, you thought I had forgot about that one ;)
the car I had at that time was a HA viva, with more leaks than the titanic, and used more oil than Red Adair, when I saw the sunbeam I just drooled, could never forget that yoke
That was my first car it had twin carbs, I loved it. didn't have it more than a few moths then the engine needed changing, before that I had a bedford van when I was fifteen.
How the hell did you remember that?
Buffalo, that would be great. My family all grew up in Altcar St., my Mother and her Mother before her. All my
sisters and brothers and aunts and uncles. We moved to Sydenham when I was two but I still spent a lot of my
time as a teenager there before I left for Canada. I still have two cousins in Arran Street. Thank you so much
for the time you are taking to keep our memories alive. :air_kiss:
Duggans shop was at the corner of middlepath st and foundry st and Khartom st before the sydenham by pass was built.

Sean was a mate of mine, they moved to Beachmount, their fathers name was Barney, mother was called Sadie.REP, next time you are talking to seanie, please tell him I was asking about him
Sean was a mate of mine, they moved to Beachmount, their fathers name was Barney, mother was called Sadie.
Sean and I did a lemonade round when we were kids. One night he fell off the back of the van.We thought he had broken both of his wrists. When we got to his house Barney took one look and said,:They are,ONLY,staved.Hold on a minute."He filled the sink with cold water and told Sean to put his hand in.He reached down and gave his arm and hand a helluva yank. The screaming was awful and before you could blink he had done the other one.As it turned out he was right and next day he was back on the street-Good as Gold.I'll never forget that til the day I die.
I was and still am glad that it wasn't me.
Sean was a mate of mine, they moved to Beachmount, their fathers name was Barney, mother was called Sadie.
They did move from 61 Anderson Street in the 70's....there's Sean, Eddie, Gerrard, Liam, Kevin, Brian, Jim, Maureen....and Paddy, my husband lives in Canada now. Never had the pleasure of meeting Barney....but from the stories I've been told he was quite a character.
hi wendi how are you and paddy doing its jims wife
Barney was a "Rough Diamond" to say the least and Sadie had a Heart of Gold.
Luckily, most of the family got their looks from her-Barney wasn't much of a "looker".LOL.
Just off the phone to Our Sean ....says he knows who you are....and that he ran into your brother Thomas outside the Royal the other week...says he hasn't seen him in donkey's....asked where your livin now, and that he's glad to see your still alive...lol :D He had a good chuckle about your story!!!

Buffaloburger; I can't view the photo's youposted, (maybe you removed them?) are you able to send them to me or post them back up the forum again?

If you were standing in Seaforde St looking up Sherriff St towards the mountpottinger Rd, on the right side of Sherriff St, about half way up, there was a large gap between the houses, as if a building had once been there, can any one elaborate ?About 1971 there was a bobby trap (IED in today's language) bomb, set to go off in an empty house when the military raided one of the houses. Residents and army were both injured, lucky there was no one killed. The house and one on either side had to be demolished. leaving that gap in the street.

I am trying to contact Bronco Downey, he lived in the shortstrand and was married to a girl called Marie.Bronco is living down in Bray now. I was talking to his older brother yesterday. He is out of the Strand a long time now
Bronco is living down in Bray now. I was talking to his older brother yesterday. He is out of the Strand a long time now
Was he put out by the RANo he wasn't put out, he re-married and lives in Bray with his wife and kids. He has nothing to do with his ex in the strand and only bothers with his daughter there. Met him last year, he is doing well for himself and has a lovely family. Remember that one he was married to in the strand tortured him.

Are you sure about that, i could have swore he was put out cos he was a bit of a no good100% he wasn't put out. Bit of an eegit when he used to get drunk but he never did anything dodgey or dirty. His wife was a friend of my missus, they went to St Dominics together. He lived about the university area for a couple years with her, sure everybody knew that, his ex used to bitch about it to everybody. Then they moved south about a year or two after me. Met him last year, he hasn't changed a bit where as I am now bald.lol.
I would like to thank everyone who helped me locate Stephen'Bronco'Downey. To The King a very big thankyou, after speaking to Bronco I feel relieved for our family problem. While I do not wish to discuss my family's problem I feel it is suffice to say his name was used as a threat by some-one in his former family and that the man himself knew absolutely nothing of the 'problem' or the threat, it was made up to protect a grave deception done to him and my late brother many many years ago. Thanks for that sundance, was talking to him myself and will see him soon. Many lies have been told on him in the past wafflers like BoBo don't surprise me.

Are you sure these photos are of Short Strand??
Hiya Smith19, yeah all this pics were taken in or around the Strand from the 1960's through to the 80's.
The bus is travelling up the Mountpottinger road and about to pass Beechfield St, that's Mrs Murray's shop on the right. The photo was taken from the corner of Altcar St looking down the road towards Belfast lough (circa 1983). The faded colour ones were taken in the 60's on the Albertbridge Rd, (in the one with the bar- name escapes me!) Lisbon St would be on the right just out of view. In the other colour pic it is looking up to the junction of Castlereagh St, Mountpottinger Rd and Albertbridge Rd. There are a couple of the same area in B&W. In the photo of the bombed house that was taken on the Mountpottinger Rd just opposite Vulcan St/ Sheriff St a few doors down from Lizzy Grahams Shop (exact date escapes me but I think it might have been 1970 or 71. The funeral photo to my knowledge wouldn't have been published on this site or many others before was taken of the funeral cortege of 4 local IRA men Steele, Bell, Magee & Dorrian in Feb 1972 as it was leaving the Short Strand Rd and about to cross the Albert Bridge.
There were people called McMillan that lived in Moria Street. (Dickie McMillan) Maybe connected.Dickie McMillan was Hughies father, He was married to Mary McGivern. They lived in No20 Moira St. They had a large family Hughie, Jim, Richard, Geraldine, Pat, Mairead and Marie.
hello Kaz,a good bet for Short Strand photos would be Short Strander Frankie Quinn who has a photographic exhibition in Conway Mill all next week.
hi trez and welcome to the forum, where did u live in the short strand in 73? and wat were ur memories from then?
If I cant get to Belfast right now, how would I get some pix from around 1973? This is the time I lived there, and yes times where hard but a Ghetto is too extereme. It was the people who ensured it was not a ghetto, decent hard working, honest, neighbours and friends
hi trez and welcome to the forum, where did u live in the short strand in 73? and wat were ur memories from then?
Hi Mickybo,hi trez, yeah a lot of tough years as you say, i wud have been 12 in 1973 and prob at secondary school, lived just off the short strand but wud have frequented the mountpottenger in search of at riot at the barracks and well out of sight of my ma and da lol, u rem any names from that time?
My Grand parents where from Mountpottinger Road, We spend alot of time visiting from Dublin. At one stage we lived there for a couple of years 1973. They where tough years for everyone. I have good memoires of my family, friends and neighbours at that time.
hi trez, when u r 10 and 12 it seem like fun, tho looking back it was pretty scary and dangerous, no wonder my da wud clip me round the ear if he caught me rioting lol, do u visit belfast much? a lot has changed, tho the rioting in the strand has recently returned?
Yes it was scary at times and dangerous, Sadly no I don't visit much. My Grandparents,Mum Uncles and Aunt all from there long before the troubles began. It will always hold a special place in my heart.hi trez, sadly i have moved on many years ago, tho not that far to pay it a visit now and again, im sure u wudnt recognize it anymore, so hold on to those memories, im sure it all seems like last week lol.

A couple of times every week for the last few years I pass on the train waste ground of what I believe is the old Sorocco works, now it is my understanding that there is a cronic shortage of social housing in the Short Strand, that being the case why are there no houses being built on that site, surely it cant be the shortage of money, because just a half mile away there is an area that they threw money at it as if it were confetti, namely the Titanic Quarter....Can some of you good people of the Short Strand enlighten me to what the reason of this situation is?
grannyspice:the saddest thing about looking at an old wedding album, ours is from 1967 is that most of the people in the photos have passed away. You are right jonjoe. I think in our group photo there is only one or two of the wedding guests still alive :-(

religion wasnt at fault m8. it was people using religion as a scap goat for to go to war.
one god, 10 commandments. hardly an excuse for war !!!!
chaddie, you quote stalin and pol pot as irreligious. Be careful that you dont misunderstand your own statement.
Stalin and pol Pot were not exactly religious. They helped a few people to an early grave.
chaddie, you quote stalin and pol pot as irreligious. Be careful that you dont misunderstand your own statement.
Religion is the name given to a system of believes pertaining to a transcendant realm, with its social structures, practices and moral teachings. Stalin and pol pot, only believed in " themselves"

the bible is a book of hate.its filled with stories of rape murder incest and genocides.if you were foolish enough to believe and follow every word in the bible you would either end up in jail or the mad house.hI Billy, I think you are referring to the old testament when you say these things. Jesus changed all that. Try reading the new testament, and I feel your opinion may change.

I lived at 59 Seaforde St. My brother, George Walsh, lived on Vulcan St. with his wife Una (RIP) for many years. We lived at 79 Seaforde Street [last house - beside Bell's and opposite Bobby McCartney's yard] until the family moved when I was aged 10 or 11. I still continued into all my teenage years [and even slightly later] going back over to aunts and friends every weekend. I seem to remember George Walsh [vaguely] in that street and I also seem to recall Phyllis[?] as being one of the family. But unsure - perhaps the memory goes haywire after a certain point.
smickair: it wasn,t the number of houses in the street it was the number of people in the houses. God bless the man who invented bunk beds.
It was same were I livedCould have but the only Bennetts I knew lived in 79 and another family further down Seaforde Street at no 47, jonjoe says. There were Bennetts in Thompson Place and Harry Bennett lived in Moira Street [I think?]
Was there a Jim or John Bennett lived in sheriff street
Would be in late sixties now
Did he go to australia
Hi All
since when did Seaforde St belong on the Short Strand .The bus depot and Richardsons fertillisers and a few houses .Ballymacarrett is the proper area
name.
I remember all those corners well and very fondly. Those were the best of times. We just didn't know it. I left Seaforde St. when I was 14 and all I had to take with me was the memories of the people and places I'd left behind. Those memories kept me going when times got tough. The sights and sound of the district are etched in my mind forever. I'll never forget the good people and their kindness. I'll never forget my chums and the great fun we had together.. Mary even though I grew up in Sydenham like you I will always the good times and friends I had around your neighbourhood. My family all lived in altar street but had many friends at your end. The best of people. :-*
Mary and Jinny Kinsella, lived opposite Martha and Bella Bradley, remember they use to sell chocolates for charity, I am Bella Bradleys granddaughter Isobel Ria Lundy and Susan Lundy lived a few doors from us. Maura Stratton is my cousin.BellaBella. My sister is married to a John Stratton from Severn Street. Her name is Marie ( Hillis ) Stratton.
Moondog I knew Marie stitt. She moved to New Zealand I think don't know jimmy irvinejimmy as married to my late sister and they both. Marie and jimmy lived in the house in lowrey st I was in nz ast year thin she is now in oz. He would be gone 50 odd yrs

All the streets in the markets are called after peoples names, but the strand is a puzzle. Some are names, Thompson, Moira, AAron; others cities, Lisbon, Madrid. Then it just changes to jibberish, Kilmood, sherriff, were did they think them up.
Hi Rosaleen whats new with you, Any more info from ST Monicas girls as i said last time have not seen any of them. Every one must be living away from Belfast lol :) .
There was meaning to some of the other names.Thank you for that Margana, are you any relation to Francie Monaghan
Seaforde and Comber are towns in County Down.
Saul is a townland near Downpatrick and Kilmood is a townland between Killinchy and Lisbane (near Comber)
Thank you for that Margana, are you any relation to Francie Monaghan
Hi Erin

Anyone any knowledge of Margaret OReilly from Sheriff Street or Pauline ONeill from Seaforde Street .going back to the early 60s
I knew O'Neills from Seaforde Street (I think Bridie was the mother and I'm guessing that Pauline was a daughter) but my sister would have a better knowledge than me as she's older. I'll be speaking to her in a couple of weeks and I'll ask about Pauline.
Were they called Smiths CrispsYes they were Smiths crisps, they were the original crisps. So many times in the pictures I bit into the wee packets of salt.

frankie, I totally forgot about Anthony Thompson, there were other Thompsons on the mountpottinger rd as well, Dessie, lived in 99...
My Grt Uncle James Keegan lived in Altcar Street, James was Thomas brother.
As I have always seen myself as an Ulster Scot, I am really chuffed to see my background is not what I always thought. If anyone can help me add to the family history I would be very grteful.
