Mexico and Tokyo? Another brother is The boxing coach Terry. They moved to Turf Lodge in the 60s. Yes Anthony i looked up the web that was a Seamus nothing to francis st ones.Iknow all the mc caffertys Tony was in my class in St anthonys
Boxer, I'm going by the p6 class 1958.All the names here were in my class. Was along with big Willie Irvine a few months ago had a drink with him. Some other names i remember are Joe Pollock,Gerry Rooney, Tony Mc Shane,(frank Mc Kinney was two of them)One from Stanhope st one from Wilson st,Digger Mc Corry,Brendan Vernon, memory away again Cheers
Sam Conway, Noel Vernon, Roddy Corley, Anthony McCarty, Anthony Matthews, John McMullan,Henry Rooney,James Ramsey,Tony Black, Franky Black, (twins) Patrick Loughlin, Micky Cotterill, Harry Campbell, Danny McGuinness, Robert McAllister, Brendan O'Donaghue, Malachy McIlwee, John mcNulty, Willie Irvine, Anthony Duffy, Joe Douglas.
That's all the p6s for 1958. I think different classes shared the same room at that time and that is why some of the names you gave me may have been in the same room but a different class. I hope this assists your memory.

hi st anthonyhear! hear!
have you any photos of st anthony's school if you have please post them. .ourjoe
I have some photos of St Anthony's from 1970's and 1980's. They include pupils such as the Gaston's from Brown St and the late Paddy Downey's family with their art trophy awarded by St Anne's Cathedral. I also have a group photo taken at Belfast Zoo around 1975.
And what a great Family they are too.We shared a house with then in Francis Street and you St.Anthony shared a few spuds with us too didn't you

Of course there is thousands of us. I have a lot of the school records going back many many years up until about 1975 and if you are looking for some history of the past pupils let me know.
I think I've seen the 1940's photo before. Mrs McConnell, caretaker/cleaner in St Anthony's in the 1970's-80's, showed it to me. She brought up a family in Millfield before moving to Brown St. I remember her little Millfield home with the half-door. I believe that old Mrs McMahon, who lived nearby, was the last resident of Millfield, thus breaking a continuous period of human settlement of some 350 years. I may be wrong there so perhaps some local can confirm if that is so.Johhnymac those photos are on the Smithfield thread. Mary McMahon was married again to Billser O'Hara. I have posted her photo on the Smithfield thread with her next door neighbour Mary Murray, whose daughter was married to Tommy McConnell. McConnells moved to 5 Brown Street and from there to Durham Street.
This was the school's final Christmas as it closed the following summer. Noeleen was born 6 months after her father's death. Her late mother, Rosaleen, was a wonderful person who contributed a lot to the life of the school.
St Anthony could you have a wee look and see if you can fund any mullans from Coates street on the reg from around 1935 up to 1969hi i talk (type)on facebook occasionally with one of the mullans from coates st, she is named caroline she lives in lasalle now, her da was pat r.i.p we called him "dick" she has a sister here in canada married a brady.

St Anthony's P.S. pupils visit Black's Farm on the Ballyvaddy Road, near Carnlough, as part of their week at Drumalla Outdoor Education Centre. In the background is St Anthony's teacher, Mary McAlinden, and Drumalla warden, Eddie McDonnell. The photo dates from about 1981.It looks like Jimmy Fitzpatrick (L) and his sister Eileen (R) of the Photo

March 1979. St Anthony's pupils are ready to set off for a week of outdoor activities in Drumalla House, Carnlough. Included are Karen Dempsey, Jim Walsh, Joanne Rooney, Patricia Begley, Kathleen Murphy, Peter Valente, Ciaran McKeown and Geraldine kelly. That was the trip where Karen found a £10 note on the beach which was then returned to the distressed old lady who lost it.

i went to st anthonys 1975 til 1982
and was wondering if u have any records on me or my sisters sylvia doherty sonia doherty michelle doherty write back and let me no thank you
In the group from 1976, I'm told Michael Magee died some years ago in Downpatrick. Alan Farrell's father was one of 5 people killed in Peter's Bar after a shooting incident. Danny's older brother, Lawrence McGlade, finished up on the front page of the New York Times when he was one of the early participants in 'The Irish Children's Summer Programme.'
I remember seeing Alan Farrell's mother walking through the town in the 70's, a tiny little woman visited with such tragedy. I often wondered what happened to that family.i take it johnnymac you are from carrickhill my wife is from STEPHEN ST her last name was KANE and also jim brights dad (rip) WAS MY COUSIN he was from the market i have been living in canada 47 years but what a small world your pictures are great
About 30 years ago the school lost 8-10 pupils after one of the Johnston family was stabbed to death. Many finished up living in Downpatrick.
Some years ago I met Patricia Kerr who is in the 1976 photo. She was working for the USIT Travel Agency in the city centre, now closed.
Jim Bright has brothers called Michael and Martin and a sister, Elaine(Elizabeth.) I remember seeing his dad in Kent Street just hours before he died. I have a photo somewhere of Jim with the late Frankie Mulholland, taken in Colin Glen about 1977. If I can find it I'll post it.
Here is a snap of St Anthony's pupils in Hillsborough in the early 1980's. In it are Debbie Williams, Patrick Leonard, Tommy Black, Lisa Moore, Tara O'Neill, Nuala Black, Catherine Rooney, maria Valente, Patricia Loughlin, Sean McGuigan, Brian Delaney, Patrick McMahon.I think that is Frank McMahon not Patrick beside Patricia Loughlin. Would that be Louise Heron on the left in front of Delaney?
frank.m, I don't hail from Carrick Hill but have had links to the area in the past, mostly the 1970's-80's. Most of the children who attended St Anthony's came from that area but there was a also a few from Edward Street such as Kathleen Torbitt and the Lyttle sisters, Kathleen and Elizabeth. Some came from the lower New Lodge such as the Moores and there were some from Millfield/Brown St such as the McConnell's and the Gastons. Let's not forget the Crawford family and the Vernons? from Samuel Street and Brenda Torley and her sister Angel, from Winetavern Street.
As a child I played street games with a girl from Samuel Street who used to visit an aunt near to where i lived. That was in the summer of 1964. Her name was Bridie McNulty, who was born on 20th November, 1950.

Here are a group of St Anthony's pupils in Colin Glen in June, 1977. Included are Jim Bright, Frankie Mulholland, Margaret Murray, Frank Crawford, Patricia Kerr, Cathy McMahon, Anthony Campbell, Joanne Moore, Annie Fitzpatrick, and the Gaston sisters, Elizabeth and Catherine.Franky Mullholland, another pupil who was shot dead.
Re the last pic. Tina Heron does have her back to the camera. Others in the photo (just) are Eddie McClean and Brenda Torley who came from Winetavern Street.Brenda Torley still lives at the same address.
Here are some St Anthony's pupils in Glenariff about 30 years ago. Catherine Gaston is pointing at the sign. Others in the photo are Maria Valente, Karen Downey, Tara O'Neill, Karen Dempsey, Kelly Black, Patricia Begley and Eileen Fitzpatrick.

Thank's for that info. Do you know what Patricia's sister, Eileen Begley, is doing now?
It's January, 1982, in the boys yard of St Anthony's P.S. In the pic are Brendan Carville, Martin Connor, Patrick Leonard, Sean Valente and Paul Leonard.my 2 nephews in this photo, patrick and paul leonard(rip), my son later went to st anthonys in the mid 80's.

This 1978 photograph shows the old homes in Millfield before they were demolished. The McConnell family lived in one before moving to Brown Street. The last resident of Millfield was an old lady, the mother of 'iron man' Paddy McMahon??? I may be wrong there so perhaps someone could confirm that. I remember Mrs McConnell standing at her 'half door' chatting to passing locals. A lovely person to know. The McConnell's lived in the middle house. The Iron Man's mother Mary lived in the first one to the left and at the other end was Jackie campbell's. His wife and kids were poisoned by gas from the gaslight just outside their bedroom window. He kept the kids toys in the window for many many years.

Mickeybo, I'm sorry to hear that Paul Leonard is no longer with us. I remember the two brothers so well. Patrick was always very lucky whenever there was a class ballot for an Easter egg. I remember him telling me this joke:thanks for that johnnymac, sadly lost him to cancer about 5 yrs ago, patrick living in derry and just recently hooked up with him on facebook, will pass on details of this site and maybe he will pay it a wee visit...?
Q. Where does a policeman live?
A. 999 Letsby Avenue.
Sadly, there have been a number of St Anthony's children who died tragically young. I am thinking of Patrick Mackin and his sister, Rose, Annette Williams whose grandmother worked in the school kitchen, Michael Magee, Frankie Mulholland. Then there was one of the Bennett boys and Thomas Valente??? They were all pupils in the 1970's and 80's. I have more photos from that era to post so it would be good if former pupils from those years knew about the site.

The boy on the left with the striped jumper looks familiar to me but I can't put a name to him. Any ideas?
Unity Flats from St Anthony's P.S. about 30 years ago. This is a cracking photo. That junction has so much history. The first barricades were erected after major disturbances here 2nd August 1969.
There were a number of derelict buildings adjoining the school up until the 1980's when they were demolished. Here is a view from the second floor of the school looking towards Samuel Street.
they used to store bonefire tyres in francis st in a gateway that had vertical metal bars, i remember we from boomer st made a "raid" on it, that was in the early fifties.that is a great pic of the school and the oul back yards caked with years of whitewash..
I have many memories of climbing on to McMahon's/Stanton's flat roof to sunbathe and crawling along the walls heading towards Samuel Street. There was about 15/20 ft drop between the back walls of the houses and Watson's joinery on the left of the photo but as a kid it seemed to be a hell of a lot deeper. Entrance from the yards to the entry were via a flight of step. We used to store bonfire wood in it.
The tops on the walls were loose and my brother and myself had many hair raising experiences as we crawled along.
The green building in the background was Stevenson and Turner's having previously been occupied by Coulter's.
ourjoe middle bottom is gerard magee, who is married to my sister.
I'm more likely to remember names from 30-50 years ago than 5 years ago. The St Anthony's children were great kids to work with and the parents were always appreciative of anything that was done to enrich their children's experiences.Johnnymac there is a carrickhill page on facebook which is called growing up in unityflats/carrickhill, im sure ur pics wud give a lot of pleasure on there.
i will check out Carrickhill on Facebook.
Some of the teachers from the school, with the aid of some parents, conducted a cycling proficiency scheme in Unity Flats around 1982. Two of the children are Tracey Dempsey and Rosemary Porter. Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to the identity of the lady with the sign.Johnnymac, That looks like Maureen Caldwell. I was involved in painting the graffitti about the Common Market on that wall. The prediction was that a pound of butter would end up costin 40p 8 shillings. It's about 6 or 7 times that amount now. lol

hi st anthony
let me know if i got the name and photo wrong
were are they now
ourjoe
ourjoe, I have just seen this post. I can hardly make out the names but I think they are right.
Jim McCallum was killed in a car bomb attack on Murtagh's bar on the corner Mayo Street/Springfield Road 1971. Jim Kerr was shot dead while working in a filling station on the Lisburn Road 1972. Patrick Savage died on his 50th birthday. All the others are alive and well. I still see some of them now and again. By the way it was good to meet you again.
St Anthony, is that Pauline Elliott in the middle of the 1963 photo? She would have been about 8 then.
I didn't know that Brenda still lived in Winetavern Street. I remember the time there was a massive explosion at the Grand Central Hotel. Brenda's classroom shook with the force of it. Artwork fell off the walls. Brenda was very concerned that her mother may have been hurt. She was reassured when she was taken down to Winetavern Street to see her mother. Their home had a broken window but it could have been so much worse.
Some of the boys used to tease her about her red hair. I reminded her that she would still have a full head of hair when most of those boys were going bald. That cheered her up.
Oh St. Anthony you're a wee gem - that's a cracker and yes, I remember nearly all of them.
Annette Williams name jumped right out at me - she was my lovely friend who got polio and died really young. I saw pics of her on the site and it really brought a lump to my throat.
Anybody know anything about the whereabouts of the McDaids - they were a great bunch of lads?
St. Anthony - do you remember the McGlades - I'm sure Anthony had a twin sister - Mariette or something like that - ring any bells?
I knew them (McDades)from they were wee nippers and lived up in Eglington Street flats.I remember helping to move them to Upper Meadow St at the start of the troubles when they were put out of Eglinton flats. Geraldo or Gerard is living in the "States" this last number of years as was Marty, who was a fireman in New York at the time of the 9/11 disaster but is now back living in the New Lodge.

Unity Girl, do you recognise any names here :P :P :P :P
In 1981 many of the St Anthony's pupils got the chance to cross the North Channel to spend the day in Scotland at Luce Bay where the water is very shallow and ideal for children to splash about in.Other names Sean Valente and another Valente beside him (maybe Christine) behind Brendan Carville is Carmel Conway
I can't name everyone in this group but I recognise the Carville brothers, Noel and Brendan, Jimmy Doherty, Anne Clarken, Jimmy Fitzpatrick and Martine Conway.
jaysus cant believe im not on this register, I was in the same class as most of these ones...Annette McWilliams was a lovely wee girl
One of the boys in this class list, Seamus Hopkins from the New Lodge area , was murdered when he was a teenager. He transferred to St Patrick's Primary after getting on to the wrong bus and finishing up in St Anthony's P.S. in Willowfield. He took part in the Irish Children's Summer Programme, Greensboro (North Carolina.) He came home from the USA with a brand new bike which had to be put inside the bus at Dublin Airport as there was no room in the boot. He was a lovely young lad who died so tragically.
Seamus was at the Mater Hospital and the story goes that someone invited him to a party. His body was found about 60 yards from my flat across the West Link. I watched the forensic teams working at the scene not knowing it was Seamus. He lived in Unity before moving to the New Lodge with his family.
mec, are you sure you went to our wee school? I think mr johnnymac photoshopped that photo and put you in it. :D :P :P :P :P :P

Eros, could you give approximate year as most registers don't have home addresses on them
Patrick, the school photos that I have put on here date between 1974 and 1985. That roughly coincides with the years I worked in St Anthony's. I have nothing prior to 1974. I would love to see photos taken in the school in the 40's, 50's and 60's. There doesn't seem to be too many about.I went to St Anthony's from 1953 tell 1960 don't every remember geting photo's taken i think with all the laws now with children you can't take photo's my niece was at school today as her son was in the Christmas play no video are camera's were not permited
In September 1980, St Anthony's P.S. along with its twinned school, Moyarget (near Ballycastle), were invited to the City Hall in Belfast where they were met by Lord Mayor, John Carson. The St Anthony's pupils in this pic are Tracy Carville, Nuala Black, Kathleen Murphy, Bernadette McGivern and Frank Williams.

Nuala, there are a number of photos here of your sister and yourself. I am hunting out some more from that late 70's - early 80's era. Last night I found a photo of yourself and two others with musical instruments in hand (percussion). Unfortunately my photo scanner is misbehaving so I may have to get a new one. BTW many of these photos have been copied by 'St Anthony' onto the school's Facebook page. (Stanthony's Millfield.)Cant Seem to find the facebook page, can someone put up a link.

Her funeral mass will probably be in St Mary's on the Hill on a date to be announced.Miss Mc Alinden,Thankyou, For being There, For all us Children. You keep us safe Within the Warmth of your Heart,You have a place in mine , Rest In Peace..x

anyone remember the Mc Cleaves,Duffys,Mc Canns the Aulds ,Downeys Big Nelly, mcCaffertys
Burns
Everybody went to St Anthony's School Jean Auld went on to sing in the Fiesta and oneof the mc Cafferty's
done himself proud in boxing
The masters were O'Brian O'Shea Mc Carthy Mc Fadden and Miss O'Doherty
Mc Carthy was a bit of a bully and liked nothing better than a excuse to get out the strap
one day it got a bit much for Mr O Shea who then fought with Mc Carthy until the head O'Brian stopped it
Mc Carthy finally got dismissed
tO this day I really believe that if had been allowed to continue he would have caused serious injury's
to some of us
The P1-3 classes went to Crawfordsburn Country Park for their summer trip. This photo dates from around 1984. I don't know the names of the children but two look like members of the Johnstone/Magee families.Agnes Mary on the right

My mother Martha Brady and her sister Peggy from Carrickhill went to St Anthony's. They were born 1928 and 1930 so should be in records from mid 1930s to mid 1940s. My mother talked about being taught by two sisters who were teachers during her time there. Any info or photos from this era would be appreciated.
