A foul mouth drunk and woman beater.
Why the people here had no say in naming the City Airport after him, was a total disgrace.
Then again, there is a strong perception within Nationalism that both airports are strongly Unionist in their workforces.
George Best City Airport...what an embarassment. A foul mouth wife beater and a drunk.

I don't normally agree with you but i do on this. He was also given a new lease on life and decided to drink excessively once again.

I know he had his faults but God rest him.

He was a sad and tortured soul.

Addiction is a dreadful thing.  :(

A very 'Christian' outlook if I may say so.  :D  The City Airport or to give it its proper name ' The George Best Belfast City Airport' is a private business as is 'Belfast International Airport' and as such are entitled to name the airports as they see fit. At the very least neither airport is named after a dead terrorist.  ::)

The airport wasn't named after him because of his religious denomination and he was never in any way sectarian,... in fact he was noted for not being sectarian.

I prefer to remember George for the amazing sportsman he was rather than concentrate on his sad private life . he was a raging alcoholic who was given a second chance but sadly could not leave the booze alone. i believe he was   a decent man with a problem ,an addiction.. who am i to judge anyone we are all entitled to our opinions in this free world  but honestly there are many people with addictions out there who hurt others through their actions unintentionally .  I know one in my own Family years ago . George  was a popular /talented person and his own worst enemy .  He had  the interview shows a great sense of humour and irony.  RIP George you lived your life your way.

I am fortunate enough and old enough to have seen George play a few times when he was in his prime in the late sixties and I would say that the comments made by misssmyth1  were a fair reflection of his chaotic life.

"The scout who had spotted his talent at the age of 15 sent a telegram to manager Matt Busby which read..."

"I think I've found you a genius."

43 minute documentary about him,... towards the end of his life,... which is mainly interviews with him,... and he speaks very honestly and openly,... it's very good, if that's the right word.

Does anyone remember the Michael Parkinson interview where George said  (correct me if I am wrong)

I spent my money on fast Cars Women and Booze   and squandered the rest ... what a wit..

He truly was a genius on the pitch and for all of his faults not many people had a bad word to say about him.  We all make errors while going through life but we live life  our way.

George Best is a Legend of our Time.
Whatever his personal problems were-can never take that away from him or us.
Its very easy to bring down people like George-but to my mind it says more about those who do so
than George.

No they didn't,... and that included people who might have been expected to have had reason to,... such as a certain group of very partisan Scottish football fans,...  :)

1990 TV interview

https://endlessvideo.com/watch?v=ksCwQWmRPak (https://endlessvideo.com/watch?v=ksCwQWmRPak)

A followup TV interview in which he discusses the response to that previous interview.
That interview is followed by another interview later in his life, after his hospital stay, in which some fantastic clips of him playing are included, and Michael Parkinson also appears as a guest and speaks about George. George's father also appears in the video.

"George Best bares his soul about his personal life"
https://endlessvideo.com/watch?v=N2OWF7P84PY (https://endlessvideo.com/watch?v=N2OWF7P84PY)

"George Best talks candidly to Roisin McAuley about his Northern Irish roots, the effect his fame has had on his loved ones, and - inevitably - his alcoholism. He speaks affectionately about Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby and is scornful about journalists who call him a 'has-been'. This was, after all, the man who did it all when he was still young."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Did You Know ?"
George Best died on 25 November 2005. Though the plan had been that a minute's silence would be observed before all Premiership games the following weekend, many crowds chose instead to hold a minute of applause."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He was always very obviously a far more thoughtful and introspective and serious man than his public persona ever gave the impression of his having been.

George.... a drunk, woman beater and foul mouthed with it.
Because he was good at kicking a bit off leather around, all else is forgiven ?? lol
Call a spade a spade....a woman beater...I say, he carried out violence against women. Shouting loud so it sinks in. ABUSED/BEAT women.
If it was my daughter he was kicking around, I'd be kicking him around. How hurtful and shameful, to name an airport after a domestic abuser. So wrong....Giving encouragement to violence against women in the home...😠

She has told how, throughout their eight-year marriage, Best subjected her to violence.
He beat her up and broke her arm and cut off much of her hair while drunk. An assault on Boxing Day 2003 left her with a black eye and a bruised lip.
Her father Adrian Pursey called her ‘foolish’ for not pressing charges against Best, who was arrested but released without charge.

The Indrpendant... 2007

It is not only novel-writing that gets you off the hook: if you can kick a ball, we don't seem to mind if you kick a woman. George Best first beat his wife Alex on her 25th birthday, when he punched her to the floor and kicked her six times in the chest and face. Then, on Christmas Day 2003, he gave her a bruised lip and swollen face. "So what if she's in hospital? It's the best place for her," he snapped at the press the next day.

We all have faults. Yet turning a blind eye to abuse by people in the public eye is wrong.

George Best Airport is a total disgrace. The naming taking place without public consultation.
What does it say to the outside World about us...? A serial violent foul mouthed wife beater, the gateway (City Airport) to the North. Cringeworthy. 😨😣

It's the best place for her," he snapped at the press the next day.

tours, I'll say it again! Why are you dragging all his faults up?  No one is condoning or turning a blind eye to abuse of any sort i don't get why this is all your focusing on.  ???
You should also remember that he has met his maker and he has been judged.

While not an excuse remember he was a very sick man. God have mercy on his soul.

I for one hope he's found the peace he was looking for in life.

What does this mean ? Thanks in advance.
Do you mean, that because he was a good footballer he should be allowed to get away with whatever he wanted ???
A dangerous precedent.....Half the problem these beasts get away with things, because their put on a pedestal. Untouchable.
what are you talking about I never said anythink about thanks in advance.

False mercy is worse than no mercy at all.
The airport name is a disgrace.
Jimmy savile was good on tv, but a paedo sex abuser.
Weinstein a good tv producee, but an abuser.
Best was every bit as much an abuser.
Check out what his own son callum has to say.
My main gripe is, that the airport should never have been named after a violent domestic abuser.
The naming, another cynical ploy in keeping the notion of plc NI (our wee country) going.
This NI notion taking preminence over him knocing his son or wives about, or his foul mouth rants or squandering a new liver.
Again..."punched her to the floor and kicked her 6 times in the face and chest".
Again, "broke her arm and cut much of her hair off".
What a particular nasty piece of work.
Im glad it wasn't my sister, a new liver would have been the last of his worries.😕
FALSE mercy, is no mercy.
Belle, I dont see why your just focussing on george the footballer ? I dont understand.
He was obviously a sick man, given his violence. He has met his maker for sure, and I hope God judged him easily.
Yet to hide away uncomfortable truths is a lie unto itself. Revisionism is scandelous in it self, even George Best.
Its like the notion that the 6 counties is a country. Propogated by using household names such as George Best, where violent foul mouth pasts or quickly forgot about.
We're not Brazil we're Northern Ireland  :o
The Cookstown sizzler's name, at the gateway (airport) to our capital. Dear God.

I was in awe of Besty as a kid. The poster on the bedroom wall etc. Playing football against a wall on my own or against other kids I dreamt I was Besty. Unfortunately, the only time I saw him play was at his testimonial at Windsor Park, when he ran round the pitch at the end with his infant son on his shoulders. One Callum Best. What a right herbert that lad turned out to be. George was long past his best. When he died I organised a huge wreath on behalf of Manchester United fans, costing a fortune. It was delivered by a guy from Dublin who had never been 'up north' before.

I have mixed feelings about George now. The tragedy lay in the back story. A kid from the streets, he was essentially a homebird. He missed his ma and she missed him. She couldn't cope with the press camped outside her little house and the pressure being put on her son. She took up the drink to cope. When she died ( because of the drink), the die was cast. The only person he truly loved had died because he became successful in a footballing sense. No woman was going to get close to him after that, but cursed by his handsome features women were attracted in their droves, despite his diminutive stature. He took the well-trodden path of the trophy girlfriend ( because no-one was going to measure up to his mother). I very much doubt George was the great lothario he liked to be thought as, on account of his constant bragging of which trophy girlfriend and the three Miss World's he had slept with. That all smacks of deep insecurity.

This is the best George Best video on the net, no pun intended.

I don't think you understand the nature of alcoholism.  It's not something you want or something you ask for. I don't think you understand what it does to you mentally and physically.  You will do and say things that go against your very nature and soul.  It takes you over and the worse thing is once it's got you in it's grip it's almost impossible to get rid of it.

Take a breath, tours, and when you say your prayers thank Almighty God you're not in that position and pray for those poor souls who are.

No one is excusing criminal behavior.

I honestly would never condone a man beating his wife or anyone beating anyone else i was just trying to get across that I admired  George the sportsman, George the charmer. he was very flawed and an alcoholic and as someone pointed out probably very insecure and went with beautiful women to show he could ..  bur he did joke about it and took the p.    out of himself. as for George the baddie i prefer not to dwell on that as I stated no one is perfect and he was his own worst enemy. the ladies loved him and he could get anyone . he wasn't my type but I could. see  his attraction to those who liked the superficial type of life and the fame . many of his ladies made money selling stories . as for the name of the Airport I have no opinion  in that as I have not lived in Belfast since 1970 so do not know if the people of Belfast  were consulted or otherwise..I am not religious at all so wont be praying for anyone or  for myself . he was what he was . just a flawed human being more so than a lot of us as we are all still here and we've not been in  the public eye .we've made our mistakes in private .

This is a very valid question, Tours.

I'm of the opinion that it was right to name the airport after him. N.Ireland is tiny in a global sense but the name George Best resonates positively around the world. We can all nitpick the man's flawed character, but ultimately his legacy was his supreme footballing skill and the happiness he brought to millions.

yes he was great and also a pity of him in the end , no one really wants to be alcoholic some times the drink gets the better of them.
