I remember selling it when I worked in the confectioners. Mostly on a Sunday morning with the Lemon Sedlitz powders etc so I assume it helped a hangover but what was it made from and what did it taste like? Any one know?
-
Kali water was somewhere between distilled water and Tonic water. Whatever else it was used for, it was given to me as a child for stomach ailments and in those days before supermarkets it could only be bought in chemist shops.
-
My father still swears by it, just reminds me of sparkling water. Dad claims it cures all stomach ills!
HB ;)

I quite like Kali water! My Gran gave it to me mixed with milk when I was vomiting as a child! I still would use it for the same purpose. It's full of potassium which is good for the heart!!! Maybe that's why I have angina!!!! :( :( :air_kiss:
-
My Father always had Kali water in the house. He suffered from stomach ulcers
May

My mum has been drinking it for over 60 years. You can still buy it. I haven't a clue what's in it, I suppose it will tell you on the bottle label.
-
Thanks folks for all the info but anyone know where I can buy it? Ravengirl I suffer from low potassium but never realised that Kali water would be beneficial so will give it a go. Hope you are feeling better
-
Very like tonic water/soda water. My granny said it was good for upset stomachs :scratch_ones_head:
-
My mum buys hers in the wee Spar supermarket in Groomsport. So it should be available at most Spars. I get it for her sometimes - Cantrell & Cochrane - a big bottle is about £1.
-
;) My lemonade man sells it. my we granny used to drink it she said it was good
a sore tummy, and nicer than a bottle of porter her words not mine.
-
the maine lemonade man sells it my mother in law gets it every week. Any time any of the family have a jippy tummy we send up for a bottle and it never fails. Tastes like soda water.
-
my ma used to give it to us for bad stomachs. i think it's a mixture of soda water and tonic water.
-
havent heard of it in years
-
flippen heck. .haven't heard the word or thought of it in eons. There was always a bottle knocking about in the scullery , never a full one ,always with a couple of inches of water in it. As kids we knew to leave it alone as it tasted flat and off. It was obviously a grown ups tiffle.
The recipe was probably brought back from overseas by the empire troops ,there is a region and river called Kali in India and the potassium based water is good for the old delhi belly.

;) What about it's mate,Sarsaparilla? Still can't pronounce it and haven't seen in in a shop since the sixties.
-
remember Black Cat Cola from the 60s ;)
-
;) Aye indeed! But do you remember that other stuff. It too was a medicinal sort of brew, must 2Google" it! ;)
-
I liked Cream Soda with icecream in it. I'm also decrepit enough to remember the fizzy drinks coming in stoppered bottles. 'Rinse and Return' and money back. We called all fizzy drinks 'Lemonade' even when they weren't lemonade.
-

Fella offered us a wee exotic bit of brown stuff,(thirty bob), 4 of us chipped in and I pulled the centre pages out of my wee sisters jotter.Sprinkled the tobacco in from some opened up fegs and added the brown stuff. We all near choked and all bar none, missed the big "High". One of the wee team "tasted" the brown stuff and announced that were were tying to toke on an "OXO" cube!
Served us right!

Yes Belle, Kaline & Morphine was taken to settle an upset stomach or the "backdoor trots" .apparently it can no longer be bought over the counter as it was being taken as a substitute by drug addicts....

I remember my granny getting Kali water from the Great Northern lemonade man. I think it tasted rather like soda water but a bit more medicinal! I can also remember sarsparilla and appleade. .those were the days!
-
kali water could be bought in corner shops as well as chemists before supermarkets appeared ::)
-
I get 2 bottles of Kali water from the Maine lemonade man every Tuesday (CARBONATED WATER & BICARBONITE SODA) according to the label, tastes great with a drop of whiskey

I think it's just an old name for soda water, I can't taste any difference
-
jmac I think you might be right ;)

Are you sure it's not Potassium bicarbonate. Kalium is the latin name for Potassium. Potassium and Sodium are elements with very similar properties and are members of the alkali metals family in the Periodic Table.

Anyone tried making this with a Sodastream?
You would need to know how much Potassium Carbonate to add.
-
I worked in the new city mineral water factory kaili water is soda water some people liked kaiie water so when we filled the syphens we would put soda water on so many and kalie water it was all the same thing gismo
-
Granny kept a bottle in the sculllery under the jaw box next to the big jar and the vim.
-
did anyone ever hear of kalen and morphin? my daddy used to take that for a bad stomach.
Used to get that occasionally as a child if you had a bad dose of the skitters ! I think it's banned now because of the morphine , apparently addicts used to buy it just to try and get high.
Kali water was administered for an upset stomach, to me it was an unpleasant tasteless fizz , we got ours , if required, from the "Maine mineral man" along with the weekly bottle of brown lemonade for my Dad and fizzy limeade or American cream soda or on special occasions a bottle of Portello for us kids :)
