Sorry to see this historic building go up in smoke. 😕 I hope they can, at least, save the front of the buliding....😕

I hope the building does survive .. if not, then i bet they turn it into a car park .. or worse still, stick a montrosity of a piece of ' Sculpture' up   . I could knock and oul bit of a statue up in my back shed with a few bits of junk better than what ive seen so far and that wont cost the city thousands of pounds )

There was 100 new jobs in the pipe line, with the new extension. Now 350 out of a work. 😕
Thoughts and prayers for the staff.
Good to see certain restraunts offering free pints/coffee and food to those trying to save the building. Also the companies offering staff alternative employment.
😊😊😊😊
Belfast humor and all that on social media (re; the fire), rings a little hollow, considering the devastation for some peoples lives. 😕

I fear the damage is too great to preserve the front of the building.  Might be cheaper to pull it down.  Shops nearby will have to remain closed and traffic redirected until they can safely confirm the building will not fall down.  To save time and convenience they might just pull it down so that city life can return to business.

Farewell to a wonderful old building
1785 - 2018.

A number of old buildings across the city have been demolished, but sometimes they keep their outer structure preserved, like the old Sports department store on Queen street.  Although I doubt the Primark building's walls will be protected like this:

They would first need to put out the fire and then inspect her structural integrity to see if it was safe to enter and remove the debris.  The weather might play a role, especially as we head into winter.

Good post. I still hope somewhere, the facade can be kept. If only to try and preserve some of the heritage of the City.
Seems theres no stopping the modern student accomadation purge in the city.
Modern cheap soulless buildings springing up everywhere....😕
A point in being, Dubar Link facing the old "News Boys" building. Also, at the end of King Street, nearly facing the "Black Man" tech. That end of King Street is awful, with the new buildings put up. Ibis Hotel included.
The buck (£) seems to rule....😕
It seem knocking down the old, in order to build higher, for more return (£).

If there's enough money available, there's no real reason why it can't be rebuilt.

It would be a shame if the façade of  this historic building could not be saved.
Let's hope it's not demolished and replaced with a glass and concrete monstrosity.

I think preservation might be a foreign word in Belfast.  A few short years ago they knocked down the giant art deco Orpheus building on York Street.  The ballroom and staircase were beautiful.  If such treasures as this are happily demolished to make way for 'progress' then I doubt the ruins of the Primark building will be restored, unless there is a large financial investment in its future.

The Orpheus - Now demolished.

It's replacement is currently under construction.

IMO cities look and work best with a mixture of modern and historical buildings. I have a bit of nostalgia for the older buildings. From what I've heard, The shell of The Bank Buildings is intact, so it should be able to be salvaged. If it is saved, I'll be surprised if it returns as a shopping store. It is in a prime location to be a luxury hotel.

Is Primark moving into the Stormont Building, as on one is using it. The rent would pay for cuting the grass.

That sounds more reasonable, we first heard someone had  left the blow torch on.

I wonder what the cause was in Liverpool ?

I was only ever in the building when it was the Bank Buildings Department Store.
Also,a firm I worked for a while supplied their Wholesale division of Robert,Ledlie Ferguson Ltd.
An old traditional Belfast Store and family business.
Whilst I have no personal knowledge of Primark-they seem to have been very popular and offered
good value and good fashions for those into that.
I admit-I am a `traditionalist`-and remember Belfast when it was `Belfast`.
The day C& A closed was traumatic for all us `young ones`!!!

Heard from a few sources that it was a spark from a welding torch that caused the primark fire.
I seen on social media some wee girl said her father was working on the new Primark extension. That he said, some guy left his 'blow torch' on, while doing a bitumen flat roof. He left it unattened and it started the fire.
Many replys to her comment, included "Your dads a tout".  😊 Only in Belfast.
Belfast humor. 😂
Not to take away from the sad demise of the building and the 100's of jobs lost.
Hopefully the building  will be restored, and jobs found for those out of work.
Mc Donalds, Tessco's and Zara etc have all been closed down (due to the danger of Primark building).  So quite a few people with no jobs. 😕

Was talking to a guy in a downtown bar yesterday, an older geezer than myself I might add, and he reckons if it was going to collapse it would have collapsed by now, so they should get the men in there and start clearing the place out, during the blitz in Belfast the men were in clearing up two days after the bombs dropped, his dad among them, and he never heard of anyone being killed....too much elf and safety he reckons!!

It's just been announced that the Belfast City Council will be paying for the security surrounding the barricade around the fire ravaged Bank Buildings to the tune of £100,000, as far as we know the fire was started by a contractor working for Primark, that being the case why are the tax payers of Belfast paying for this security barrier? Why is Primark or their insurance company paying not paying for it?....and where did BCC find this £100.000?

"According to BBC NI, the council intends to recover the security costs - calculated at £100,000 - from Primark."

"Belfast mayor Deirdre Hargey said: "We are engaging with Primark and working around that."

"We know they've given half a million pounds in a support package and we'll be continuing to work in partnership with them in the time ahead"

Perhaps it's time to demolish the building, cordon it off and allow traders in and around the area to get back to some semblance of normality. Xmas is coming and a lot of smaller businesses in Belfast rely on the Xmas period to balance the books.  ::)  Nice building as it was, it's time to move on.  :)

Primark planning pre-Christmas comeback with 'new look' Belfast store

Another retailer has been asked to vacate the premises

Primark has plans for a new-look Belfast store just in time for the Christmas rush.

The retail giant is believed to have bought Fountain House with the proviso New Look is out by the end of November.

M&G Property Portfolio were asking £14.75m for the B1 listed Donegall Place premises, and it is understood they paid close to that price.

Yes jjmack-very sad to have lost a building such as this-but then for years the planners have
succeeded in destroying many other beautiful buildings which would never have been tolerated
in other Capitol cities-just Belfast.
So your correct in what you say-time is of the essence and Christmas is the time for businesses to
be up and running.
Also, the City needs to look good for Christmas-its a very special time for a lot of people.

it WAS a nice old building with an interesting front facade but peoples livelihoods are a lot more important, so its time to pull it down..Im getting the feeling that people are starting to stay away from the city centre in protest now at the inaction and indecsision, I can see this one running for years.

HAVE NOT LIVED OVER THERE SINCE 74 BUT IT WOULD BE A SHAME IF THEY DID NOT DO SOMETHING.  THEY COULD TRY AND SAVE IT.  JUST BECAUSE  IT'S  2018 DOES NOT MEAN  THEY HAVE TO  BECOME  MODERN IN THEIR BUILDINGS  , BELFAST IS AN OLD CITY AND  IF THEY CAN THEY SHOULD TRY AND SAVE IT AND IN A HURRY SO PEOPLE CAN GET BACK TO WORK AGAIN, CHRISTMAS IS COMING AND THEY NEED MONEY .  LIZ :-*

Being the second city to the capital Dublin, Belfast should try and hold on to its old buildings. Keep the facade.....and rebuild behind. 👍

It may have made economic sense to have the Christmas market in top end of Royal Avenue this year. It would have brought shoppers into that part of the city centre and there is no traffic there at present. The market looks a sight in the grounds of the City Hall.

Thats a good idea. And it would increase footfall.

Someone (many) somewhere is making money when the avenue is closed.
Sad to say....
Money is being thrown around at the minute.
Those at the coal face, having to close down. Sad.
Those in professions, drawing it out for their big expences ££.

Its all numbers ££ these days. .then those making money of it, all round for a "prosecco" on a Friday afternoon to the nearest wine bar.
NUTS
We have become "over educated" and less "get on with it".
I smell a rat.

I understand that many or most members do not actually live in Northern Ireland but for those that do, what is the current situation with The Bank Buildings, is the shell of the building still there and are there any construction activities?

Yes John the shell of the building is still there. I read a few weeks ago that plans for the reconstruction and restoration will begin in January. The exterior of the building will retain its original character. :)

Thanks ldugan, it will be interesting to follow the progress as it looks to be a massive job, especially from an engineering perspective in retaining the original front during construction.

The Nippons would certainly have had it repaired by now and reopened and the Yankees would have had it torn down rebuilt and reopened by now . The Krauts would have had it torn down , salvaged as much as they could and rebuilt it using the salvage to as close to the original as they could get , and oh yes , it would be open by now .

Apparently they still don't know what started the fire, I have a sneeky suspicion about that wee roadsweeper in Castle St, everytime I see him he's standing smoking   "Hey boy! I want a wee word with you. "
