Ex Pats.
« on: November 10, 2006, 09:58:18 PM »
Would just like to ask. As my  great grandparents are from County Antrim, and I feel a warm glow when I come over to visit, as I do. Can I be considered a distant ex pat.

All replies welcome!

Is that Pat as in patriot or as in Patrick ??? ;D

From what I read in earlier posts many months ago, Belfast is officially in County Antrim, so I suppose you qualify. Congratulations 8)

My great grandfather was from High Church Lanarkshire, lassie.  ;D ;D

Hi Lanarkshire lassie
I do think EX Pat means Ex Patriot

No M.  It means expatriate.  Presumably  from "out of the fatherland".

ex·pat Pronunciation (kspt)

n. Chiefly British
An expatriate.

And more:

ex·pa·tri·ate Pronunciation (k-sptr-t)
v. ex·pa·tri·at·ed, ex·pa·tri·at·ing, ex·pa·tri·ates
v.tr.
1. To send into exile. See Synonyms at banish.
2. To remove (oneself) from residence in one's native land.
v.intr.
1. To give up residence in one's homeland.
2. To renounce allegiance to one's homeland.
n. (-t, -t)
1. One who has taken up residence in a foreign country.
2. One who has renounced one's native land.

adj. (-t, -t)
Residing in a foreign country; expatriated: "She delighted in the bohemian freedom enjoyed by the expatriate artists, writers, and performers living in Rome" Janet H. Murray.

Having been one, it's easy to know the meaning.

I wouldn't have lasted very long as a teacher in the classroom. They'd have hung me for slapping the little wretches.

My friend rjl.

I thought that it was obvious that we are talking about genealogy, NOT Postman Pat, Jess, Red Vans and all things relating to the postal service.

Are you on the wind up?
