When were the bread strikes
« on: June 27, 2011, 03:16:35 PM »
I remember going around bakeries and standing in line for hours to try and get a loaf or whatever i could for my Ma. I was only young and my Ma would take turns with me in line. Up to the Ormeau bakery down to Thomsons just of the Donegal Pass anywhere we could find bread. It was the late 50's- early 60's i'm not sure.        :angry2: :not_i:

I remember the Bread Strike, but cannot recall the year.  I remember eating some sort of bread that seemed to melt in your mouth.............

The strikes were either 55 or 56, McCann,s in Newry were the only bakery to stay open, and that was only for loaves.

Fella from our street had an old van and used to go down there, as well as Dundalk every night and come back early morning and sell the bread out of the back of the van around the Ormeau.

He made enough money that he started his own hauling company.
i,m out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

I remember my uncle from Dublin arriving at our house with a carload of hotel pans (the big ones). Sorted out most of our street and then took the rest down to the Glens. 1960.

Have baked my own bread since 1977. Brill!

edieted to add: Oh, and btw, my da worked for Barney Hughes at the time. Never crossed a picket line. Good man.
