Brown Square
« on: June 30, 2013, 12:56:59 PM »
Hello Everyone.
I am trying to gather information and pictures of the Brown's Square area to write a short social history of the area.  I have no funding nor do I grind any political axes but I believe this area has a facinating history that reflects the sectarian issues facing/faced by Belfast.  I would be interested in any information about the general area that was bounded by Millfield - Divis Street - Boundary St (Peter's Hill side) and the south side of the Old Lodge Road as far up as Townsend Street.  I would also include any relevant material and locations from interconnecting street and peoples, for example I'm trying to find the location of F E Crawford's bleach works in the area where ammunition was stored during the 21 riots or info on Jemmy Hope who lived in Brown Square but I don't have any notion of exactly where.  I am hoping to compile a social history of the characters and people who lived and live there still.  If I get enough material I might try to scratch a PHD out of some of this as I'm also looking into the social conditions of returning soldiers from WWI (36th Ulster - 16th and 10th Irish Divisions.)  Any, any info or pictures gratefully appreciated.
