Valor heaters

this frosty weather reminds me that when I was in my teens and had started work my dad woke me up and put a Valor paraffin heater in the room for 10 minutes,it helped a bit but the smell was bad,no central heating in the sixties.

               Yeah I remember having two heaters, we lived in a big cold farm house.
                This would be around 1976/78 in England.
                 There was one which was all coved in and you took the back cover off.

                The other was better, can’t remember the make I’am sure the top of
                 it was on a hinge. It give the best heat.
                 You had to make sure the wick was the right height when lit.
                 This helped to cut out some of the smell.
                 Have to go out, need a shovel of coal for the fire.

Wb54,your second description was spot on,a hinge let the upper part open to lift out the fuel tank which held about half a gallon.
Perhaps because the wick wasn't trimmed right that was why the smell was bad.
The heat was quite good given some time and being portable was used as required around the house.

                 That one was the best, just like a two foot flue, give a great light
                 display at night. Telling scary stories with the lights off.
                 Did you get your paraffin from the garage?
                 Don’t think they would be allowed now, thank god.
                 We had a small paraffin lamp which was in the outside toilet.

                 My dad showed us how to put a new wick into the heater.

wb54,yes it gave an eerie light out through the holes round the side and top,we had a "Pink Paraffin " can and went to the local garage and filled it for about 1/6 ,the other fuel was "Esso Blue"

              Yeah, I have to say the same. The bedrooms in the farm house was big, that’s where
               they was used. Turned them off when the children went to bed.
               Had to carry ours back to the house, no car then.

               When I was growing up in Belfast, the outside toilet having to throw a coat
               over your shoulders. The light burning away, it’s was like bleak house.

wb54,the mention of the outside toilets recall forgotten memories ,I can't recall going to it in the night ,perhaps we just held it in as we never used a po,we wouldn't linger there  even during the day,in ,trousers down, do the business ,use the newspaper,trousers up,pull the chain before the smell rose

I used to have a ' Valorie ' heater years back.... Many a cold winter night down that dark wee entry we would snuggle/fumble and stay warm together  ...those were the days ... I think she emigrated to New Zealand in later years   I was very fond of her ...
