John Dallas, Ballyloughbeg, Antrim, landlord
« on: March 17, 2008, 02:48:33 PM »
I am very curious about John Dallas who is listed as my Great grandparent's landlord in the 1901 Ballyloughbeg census. He is listed as being Presbyterian, single Farmer, and age 67. (Born in 1934?) Mary Curray, a servant , Episcopalian, age 23, lived at his residence as a housekeeper.

The reason I am so interested in this man is because my Great grandparents, Samuel and Agnes Jamison, his tenants, named their son Dallas. My grandmother, Agnes Jamison Stewart named her son after him, also. My Grandmother had a cousin named Dallas Taylor who must have been connected the the Taylors also listed as being tenants of John Dallas in the 1901 census of Ballyloughbeg. (William Taylor was head of Taylor household at that time. We are related to the Taylors somehow.)

Perhaps this John Dallas was a man of good character and the two families named children after him out of affection. Perhaps this was comman practice. Any thoughts from Forum members?

I think he was more than likely born in 1834. The part of your post that surprises me is the age difference between John Dallas and his live-in housekeeper. I wonder if her perents were living or dead ... maybe John had been her parent's landlord. If they were dead perhaps John decided to accommodate Mary under his roof so that the property where she and her parents had lived could be let to a family. I wonder what size of a house and farm John owned ... Mary's father and mother could have been working for him when Mary was a young girl.

Just sort of looking around your question from http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php the date is about 1860, plus or minus 5 years

I would suspect there may have been some aspect of flattery with the prospect that he would remember them (or their so-named children) in his will.

If the original poster on this is still on board I might be able to help with part of the topic.

I saw this interesting headstone in Ahoghill Presb. & thought it may be connected to the original poster also. and a possible explanation as to the character of the Dallas family.
