Hilary Pyle of Blackrock, Co. Dublin is researching the life and work of the artist Margaret Crilley who was born in Newry in 1888. Hilary is a writer and art critic who has had books published on various Irish artists and their work. Until recently she was the curator at the Jack B. Yeats Collection at the National Gallery of Ireland.
Margaret Crilly (d. 1961) studied art at Newry Technical School (now Newry Institute of Higher Education). She won a scholarship to the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin. She studied under Sir William Orpen (1878-1931) and excelled as a portrait painter. In 1914, she married Harry Clarke who is world renowned for his work on stained glass.
